SK the Land of Extremes

Since being in Korea I have noticed that they tend to do things to the extreme.  This includes many different things:  school (going 12-14 hours a day is a tad ridiculous in my opinion, but what do I know?!) and the weather seem to be the big ones.

We will just focus on the weather part, because what else can you say other than children should not be in school for 14 hours a day and then have to go home and do homework?!  It still just blows my mind that these kids are able to function throughout the day ( I know there is no way I could) I know this because I am sitting here writing this solely because I am running on about 3 hours of sleep and this is one thing that will keep me awake.  No way I could do this everyday like them.

Ok now really time to talk about this weather thing!  Korea really doesn't do the in between thing.  When it was about a million degrees in the summer they are blasting the AC.  Yes, I'll admit it felt good at first, but after about 5-10 minutes  I am sitting inside shivering.  Now it is getting cold, but no it is not completely freezing out there.  My students are coming into class with their big puffy coats (I do usually wear my fleece since the halls are pretty cold) and blankets.  These kids are coming in from the freezing hallways and blast my heat, they turn it up to 30C, which for those of you at home is 86 F.  After about 15 minutes they complain that they are too hot so they turn the heat off, and yep you guess it 15 minutes later they are back to being freezing and blasting the heat.  Now, why wouldn't we just put it at a middle temperature so that we don't have this back and forth issue children?!

Look at all that snow!!ㅋㅋㅋ
With the cold weather, it will occasionally bring snow.  While snow can sometimes get dangerous, it is not completely necessary to make a big deal when it snows just enough to cover the ground.  You would have thought we were having a blizzard here in Sangju with the way everyone was acting.  Even got a class cancelled because the snow was 'so terrible and dangerous'.  I can't wait to see how they are when it really snows.  Which reminds me of the next thing.  I will be the first to admit that driving in snow sucks and it does kind of freak me out.  But we all know (or at least I assumed we all knew) that when it is a little slick outside you can not just press the gas and go.  You need to do it slowly or your wheels will just spin and you will sit in the same spot.  Korea apparently didn't get that little message.

Korea is one very smart country, they are all very hard workers, and very determined people.  However, they lack some serious common sense sometimes.  I just want to shake them!
